Browser Market Share, May 2011

Here is the browser market share for May 2011, based on traffic to my top site (number in parentheses shows change from April):

IE: 39.53% (+0.75%)
Firefox: 34.82% (-0.80%)
Google Chrome: 21.58% (+0.25%)
Safari: 1.75% (-0.09%)
Opera: 1.66% (-0.10%)

After seeing its lead over Firefox shrunk to 3.16% in April, IE recovered and took share from Firefox in May and now the gap is at 4.71%. In fact, IE was the big winner in May, reversing the trend of losing more than 1% in market share for two consecutive months. Google Chrome showed a small gain of 0.25% in April, but that was the second lowest monthly increase in the past year (February 2011′s 0.17% was the lowest). At this point, it’s not clear whether the observations above were simply a one-time anomaly or the start of a new trend.
