Browser Market Share, September 2012

Here is the browser market share for September 2012, based on traffic to my top site (number in parentheses shows change from August 2012):

Google Chrome: 36.07% (+0.82%)
IE: 31.08% (-1.21%)
Firefox: 27.69% (+0.05%)
Safari: 2.46% (+0.20%)
Opera: 1.19% (+0.01%)

September 2012 was another strong month for Google Chrome, which added 0.82% and now leads IE by 4.99%. Firefox, which released version 15 at the end of August, maintained a stable market share. IE was the big loser in September, losing over 1%. Microsoft’s next big release is Windows 8, which is scheduled to take place at the end of this month. That likely means that many people who are thinking about buying a new computer may wait until after the Windows 8 release. Given that IE is the default browser in all Windows PC, it will be interesting to see whether the expected influx of new PC’s in the upcoming holiday season has any impact on the browser market share.
